Safety is Everyone’s Business at P.S. 75x. By Phyllis C. Murray. “Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, Fire Prevention Week has been observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls. Since 1925 Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record..” National Fire Prevention Association NFPA

Certainly if fires are known to be a leading cause of home related injury and death, and ounce of prevention can help reduce the number of these injuries and deaths.  Therefore, P.S. 75X used the month of October as an opportunity to educate members of the school community about fire safety. While the students were learning about fire safety in the classrooms, their parents were being instructed by two of New York City’s Bravest: Lt.Frank Manetta and FFAngel Vasquez. The motto of the FDNY is” Your Safety is Our Mission.” The firemen also provided the adults who attended the workshop with fire alarms.

Our story does not end here. The firemen will return to visit each classroom and demonstrate ways to prevent fires as well as provide the strategies for a safe evacuation during a fire.  In that way, we are assured that everyone in the school community will benefit from this life-saving information.

Safety is a year-round concern at P.S. 75X. There is a School Safety Plan, an active School Safety Committee, a School Safety Agent, as well as 16 Fire drills each year to ensure school safety.

Keeping kids safe is everyone’s business at P.S. 75X.  It’s elementary!

     Phyllis C. Murray, Chapter Leader
