Bloomberg’s Broken Promises

A tax cut, Mayor Bloomberg proclaimed, would be “about the dumbest thing I’ve heard in a long time from an economic point of view.”

“The 30 bucks is not going to change anybody’s lifestyle. The billions of dollars that we would otherwise have in tax revenues can make a big difference as to what kind of a world we leave our children.”

No, not THAT tax cut — the rebate of 400 bucks in real estate tax that he had promised. Or THAT tax cut — the 7% property tax cut he had promised. He was talking about a proposed summer moratorium on the federal gasoline tax.

We know that the mayor’s word is good, so there will be a 400 buck rebate and a 7% property tax cut — just as he promised.

Unless the promise is to New York City children. The Mayor’s proposed budget includes a $450 million cut to New York City public schools. Enough to make a big difference in the schools that teach our children today. Enough that a tax cut foregone could easily make up the difference, with a great deal to spare.

Leo, a UFT Rally was held in front of the Bronx Court House on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. The message by UFTers from the Bronx Chapters was loud and clear. NYC must keep its promises to provide funding to Education. New York State Legislators have kept their promises. It is New York City’s turn to restore 180 million dollars which were recently cut from the education budgets of New York City Public Schools. Education must become a priority in New York City.

Assemblyman Michael Bernadetto, Assemblywoman Aurelia Green, Assemblyman
Michael Benjamin, Assemblyman Peter Rivera, Deputy Bronx Borough President Earl Brown, Glenda Carr, Education Notes Rep., and Elaine Duran, CEF Rep. were present to lend their voices and support to the UFT Rally. UFT President Randi Weingarten and Bronx Borough Rep. Jose Vargas spoke against the budget cuts as the UFTers, parents and kids chanted: “Keep the Promises” and “Mantenga las promesas.”

It has been said that in unity there is strength. Today, more than ever, we need the support of parents as we say NO to the proposed 630 million dollars in disruptive city budget cuts to education. We see the need to enlist parents to join us as we work together to secure the best education and best educational environment possible for our students. We need the support of parents to stand up in City Hall as we challenge legislators in the City Council to make young people a top priority on legislative agendas.

The Keep the Promises Coalition says:
“Call 800-961-6198 and make the city keep its promise to fund our public
    schools.”
