Didn’t he publish a book after Savage Inequalities, called Ordinary Resurrections? That book was good, as well. Alas, I won’t be out of school in time to hear him speak.

It seems there is no interest by the city gov’t to support quality teaching. NYC wants high turnover to keep salaries low and minimize pension obligations.

Where is the courage of NYC teachers?
We are making 40% less than their counterparts (where is Randi learning her MATH), work in the worst conditions, and we still sign up for every after school activity insight. All Teachers need to stop doing all after school activities including sports, no summer school until a contract is signed, all high school and middle school teachers need to stop taking a 6th class for 30 dollars a day. K-6 teachers as well need to offer no extra activities after the day. YES we will make a little extra money and it will make life harder, but if we don’t then we will never move forward. Strike is the last option, so we need to try something that will not hurt us 2 for 1, and still be legal. Follow the contract and do NOTHING else. That will send a message so clear, oh.. and did I forget Get Rid of RANDI. Either is on the mayor’s payroll or she represents the city.

Yes. Get rid of Randi. I’m tired of the politcal rhetoric and anti “everything anyone else comes up with” attitude. The Union heads need to look in the mirror. This Union DOES NOT CARE about it’s members. It is a self serving political machine who will gouge it’s members 2 for 1 to save face on our much needed raise. Don’t let them hurt you with an illegal strike so Randi and company can strut their stuff and pat themselves on the backs. If we are so united, why did I have to find out about our Union website from reading the Daily News?

Just a quick question… If we do go on strike, are we going to demand the return of the “give-backs” for the last cost of living raise. It seems we are giving back much less this time then we did three years ago? Has anyone heard anything about a sickout? Is that legal?

It is very easy to criticize Randi when you are not in her shoes. She is a political realist. There is such danger in going out on strike. The two for one penalty is the least of my worries. If we go out on strike, we will no longer be protected by the Triborough Law. This means that the Mayor could abrogate the contract. Klein, Bloomberg and others really do want to return labor to the 19th century. If they had their way, we would be stoking coals and washing classroom windows. I, for one, do not want our present contract abrogated. I want a raise, but I also want to have continued labor protection. I hope that Klein and Bloomberg will take this fact-finding report seriously. It is not all we wanted, but it is a whole lot better than what they have been offering.

No one said STRIKE all I said is stop all extra activities until a contract is signed. Does anyone realize the pressure it would place on the system if teachers stop everything extra? Now is the time! It seems we have accepted an attitude of defeat. As far as Randi been a Politcal Realist, what has she been real about? It is time to take the gloves off, demand to be treated like a professional, damn we don’t even show that we care about the students when we keep letting new teacher leave the city and show how bad that can be. Remember this is the only job when you go to school, get a master’s pass state exams, and are deemed “HIGHLY QUALIFIED” by the standards and are told when to sit, stand, and use the rocking chair. There is nothing that she has done that is EFFECTIVE to bring any pressure on the city. We are all about to pay big bucks for heating our homes this winter and for gas, while our salaries have not risen at all. For those of us that don’t own a house yet, we could just forget it. How can a new teacher afford a home on this salary?
