Budget Alert: Call Your State Senator Today!

Right now, the New York State Senate proposed budget is a disaster in the making for the children in New York’s public schools.

If the cuts go through, we can expect class sizes of 28 in the first grade; the loss of most after-school programs; elimination of what’s left of music, art and other enrichment programs; no summer school; and a return to conditions after the fiscal crisis of the 1970s, as schools put off necessary maintenance and buildings get dirtier and more dilapidated.

We can’t ask kids to pay the price for the mistakes that adults have made with our economy. The kids deserve better than this.

We need you to call your state senator TODAY to voice your opposition to devastating cuts in this budget proposal.

Click here to send a fax to your senator and assembly member today.

Then call the state Senate at 518-455-2800 and ask to speak to your local senator.

Don’t know who your state senator is? Look it up here.

    Michael,

We couldn’t agree with you more. Of course, we also hope that you will join with union and non-union teachers and leaders and oppose the funding freeze on charter schools which is disproportionate and unfairly exposes charter schools to a double-cut, as President of the AFT, Randi Weingarten, acknowledged last year.

I have two items I would like to mention concerning this article.

First, it would be a good idea to eliminate summer school, in my opinion. The result of this could and should be that students will focus more on passing their courses during the school year. If they can’t pass it during 40 weeks, how could they suddenly pass it in just 6 weeks?

Secondly, there is no mention of the DOE or individual schools hiring outside consultants and or partners. There is nothing that these people do, that a well managed school can’t do for itself. I include in this, all LSOs, PSO’s and F -Status groups and individuals.
