We’re going to try something new this week on Edwize: Digg

Digg is a web site where you can share and discover popular news stories. Once you have a free Digg account, you can vote to recommend stories from Edwize to Digg and submit stories on your own. Digg tracks what stories are getting the most votes and promotes those stories on their site. Digg doesn’t have editors — people collectively determine the content that rises to the top. There’s more explanation here and here, but the easiest way to understand it is to do it.

Start by signing up for a Digg account.

Then vote for the stories you like on Edwize to share them with more people. Just click on the Digg icon for the stories you like

Here’s my Digg account. When you get your Digg account set up then add me as a friend.

EdWize Upgrade

Over the next few days Edwize will be moving to a new more stable server. Any new comments or posts may not make it to the new server. We apologize for the inconvenience but the upgrade should provide faster load times and more stable blogging in the future.

We apologize about the delay in re-launching EdWize. In the midst of re-launching the site we managed to nearly destroy the CSS code that governs the basic layout of EdWize. Please feel free to drop us a note if something does not look right in your browser.

EdWize Update

Early tomorrow morning EdWize will be going offline for a planned upgrade. When we designed EdWize, we never dreamed that it would be as ground breaking as it has been for labor and education blogging.

Part of the upgrade will include the installation of new more powerful and secure version of the WordPress blogging platform. Several new tools to expand the capabilities of the blog and a database upgrade. Most readers will barely notice many of these changes, but you will notice a new design and over the coming weeks new voices and topics of discussion.

EdWize will be up and running next Monday, February 6th. Because the open-source community has provided so many of the tools that we use on EdWize, we’ll release our template and a list of the plugin’s that power the site back into the open source community after the upgrade.

We’re in the process of upgrading some of the software that runs EdWize over the next few days, and as such there is a small possibility that the site may be down for short bursts of times during the upgrade. We apologize for the inconvenience.

EdWize is built on the WordPress blogging platform, which is a community supported and open-source software license. Once we’ve made these upgrades we’re going to release some of the information about the site back into the community so that others, including readers can use the information if they’d like to set up a WordPress blog.

The Cat and Mouse Game

This week we received our first iterations of trackback spam. Essentially trackback spam is when spammers send a digital ping to a blog notifying readers that they are talking about your blog post. Unfortunately, spammers will insert links back to prescription drug sites (this is what’s been happening to Edwize), or other sites selling materials or subscriptions. To combat the spam we’ll be installing some new tools on the back end on Sunday afternoon. If you don’t see Edwize on Sunday afternoon, just check back a little later. There will be some downtime required to install the new plug ins.

On Saturday night Edwize will go dark for the better part of a day as back end changes are made to make blog faster, and more responsive to our larger audience. Edwize should be back live by Sunday night. (ed. note: Go see a movie with your family, enjoy the day, no need to keep hitting refresh.)
