Why are we allowing the media to compartmentalize this fiasco? The Daily News attacks the DoE, but only that part of it associated with this mess. Why are we not publicly asking whether the education of one million kids should be left to a Department that cannot produce coherent bus schedules.

The same processes that led to the bus fiasco have been at work in the schools since Klein's arrival. Attacking him has been portrayed as teacher union CYA. Now we have a genuine debacle that was perpetrated by the DoE and we should be emphasizing the "I told You So" mantra. The guys who can't be depended on to get your kid from home to school cannot be depended upon to develop a plan to get your kid from kindergarten to adulthood in a coherent manner. This should be the new UFT TV campaign, not the usual BOMFOGGERY.

Alvarez and Marsel, like most private consultants, made the recommendation to cut bus routes here because they made it before. That it created a similar disaster with bussing in St. Louis was irrelevant. On paper it must look like a winner. But school systems can't make it work because these are real children, real parents and real lives, not paper. What does this say about the power of private contractors to improve the quality of instruction in the system?

Chancellor Klein talks about bringing accountability to the school system. So who is he holding accountable for this bussing debacle? Who should the Mayor hold accountable? Who should the public hold accountable?
