Happy New Year to all !!!
If the members in non bonus schools want to transfer to bonus participating schools, it would be a travesty if the basis for transfer is "word of mouth or Principal favoritism".
In view of this new type bonus structure, the process for transfer MUST be transparent.
It was forseeable that some schools would vote not to participate in the bonus program.
There was no forseeable plan to facilitate teachers who want to participate in the bonus plan.
This is the issue which has to be addressed and I thank all of you for commenting.
The union would not be serving the members if transfers were based upon word of mouth or nepotism.
I do not believe the Union would advocate this method.

Peter,

I'd like to have a better handle on what's happening with transfers.

I think I would not count a principal looking for someone word of mouth as recruitment. In fact, I am concerned that jobs get filled word of mouth, and then posted on the OM as a formality.

I know people who changed jobs last year. I helped some people look. And in no case did I run into principals who were recruiting.

Do you have specifics?

I think we all need to remain concerned, especially with the loss of controls that SBO transfers previously provided.

Jonathan:

You must be joshing! One of the reasons why the OM numbers are so high is that principals all over the city are looking for "talent..." frequently asking their staff members if they know a good, whatever, teacher ... if you are a math, science, global studies teacher, with good Regents data (strong emphasis!!!) you are a commodity ... just make sure you emphasize Regents data/high passing rates in your resume/application ...

happy new year ...

It's a staggering number indeed, and the deal is a "win-win," provided you ignore the teachers who are stuck in Absent Teacher Reserve, and those who will join their ranks after 14 school closings.

If I recall correctly, there were precisely zero of them before 2005.

If I remember correctly over 5,000 teachers changed schools under Open Market over the last two years ... a staggering number ... principals are actively recruiting ... "raiding" schools is commonplace ... not exactly what Klein hoped for ... the OM list will be up in the spring ... go for it! With the "hammer" of the Progress Report hanging over a principal's head they are all looking for teachers with specific expertise ...

The way to change schools is to try your luck on the open market. AFAIK, there is no alternative, not if you want the $, not if you want to escape a merit pay school, not for anyone. You've got the same opportunity (or lack thereof) as anyone else who wants to change schools.

My words may be harsh, but they reflect reality.

Jonathan !! Merry Christmas !!
Your comments appear harsh and may be simplistic.
I do not believe the UFT would subject their members to a two tiered bonus structure in perpetuity.
There are many teachers in schools that voted to opt out of the bonus plan.
There must be a procedure to permit these unlucky teachers to transfer out.
I think there is some research of our CBA required here.
Happy New Year to all !!!

Civil Servant,

in the 2005 contract we gave up seniority transfers (half the vacancies went to who applied for them, based on seniority) and SBO transfers (the union in the school, in consultation with the principal) had a large say in who was hired, with union controls against bypassing senior, qualified teachers.

Neither would have done exactly what you are asking for. Seniority would have come closer. SBO would have put the decision in the hands of other teachers.

However, their replacement, the free market system, puts all control in the hands of the principal. There is no provision for what you ask for. There is no provision that comes anywhere close to what you ask for.

You can apply where you want. That's it.

Thank you Peter for your response.
What I meant was will the Union provide a plan or remedy to provide for transfer for a teacher in a school who opted out of the bonus program to a school where they can have the opportunity to get a bonus, independent of the Open Market you refer to. I mean a guarantee to transfer to a school where a bonus would be available.

Thanks
