Even The Elk Applaud

There is a delegation of 15 UFT activists spending the weekend in Cleveland as part of the AFT’s and Ohio Federation of Teachers campaign for Hillary Clinton. Saturday morning we attended a rally for Clinton at Latewood High School, where Bill Clinton and Randi Weingarten spoke.

During Clinton’s speech, the line which received the greatest applause from a crowd which had many Lakewood teachers and students was “Hillary will scrap No Child Left Behind, and change it for something far better.” What is interesting is not so much that line, which we have reported Clinton saying before here at Edwize. Rather, it was the incredible reaction from the crowd, and Clinton’s follow up.

“I honestly believe,” he continued, “that this is the most surefire applause line in American politics today. You could drop me into the wilds of Idaho, two hundred miles from the nearest Republican, and the elk would applaud that line.”

Whatever the results of the 2008 election, one change in American politics is already clear. The American people have had enough of NCLB’s testing craze.
