Well done interview, Michael. You spoke well on tenure and evaluation. I also agree with your suggestion of giving the college student studying to be a teacher more hands on experience in the classroom. College curriculum for students studying to be teachers should include much more classroom experience and support before they become teachers and have their own students.(Less college theory and more practical, hands on, working with students experience, along with teacher observations). Then, as Michael mentioned, they should have some type of mentoring support when they become teachers for at least two years. Yes, it will be costly to implement all this support, but it is well worth it. Your new teachers would gain confidence and clarity of their goals for the students and the students will benefit.
Another idea: What about hiring retired teachers to help these new teachers. These experienced teachers, if they are willing to come back would have a lot to offer someone just starting out. They have the expertise, the love of kids, as well as the desire to help a new teacher. It would be a win-win situation.
