New Sandy Feldman Fellowship offers unique experiences for UFT members

A joint project by the UFT and the International Rescue Committee (IRC) will establish the Sandy Feldman Fellowships next July and August to improve education for refugees at four sites this summer: Tanzania, Phoenix, San Diego and Dallas.

Two fellowships will be offered in Tanzania to work with local educators who serve the educational needs of refugees from the conflicts of the Central African region. They will strengthen the IRC’s capacity to provide high quality teacher education for primary and secondary school teachers teaching refugee girls.

One fellow each in the three American cities will serve the educational needs of students who are newly arrived refugees. The Phoenix IRC office resettles more than 500 refugees per year. The fellow there will design and implement a number of weekly programs for refugee youth who need assistance with basic literacy and numeracy skills.

In San Diego, where the IRC Regional Office has resettled more than 20,000 refugees since it was established in 1975, the Sandy Feldman fellow will help develop and teach a summer program in literacy and reading skills.

In Dallas the IRC office resettles approximately 450 refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugees from their arrival through citizenship. The Sandy Feldman fellow will help the IRC Dallas Resettlement Office design and run several educational programs for youth during the summer of 2006.

Qualifications for the Tanzania fellowship include a command of conversational and written French and English and experience in professional development for teachers and/or teacher education.

Qualifications for both the Phoenix and Dallas fellowships include experience in professional development for teachers and/or teacher education and knowledge of and experience of education programs in a multicultural setting with many immigrant students. Qualifications for the San Diego fellowship include experience in and mastery of the pedagogy for teaching reading, especially for English Language Learners and adolescents.

Other qualifications for each fellowship and full descriptions of the programs and responsibilities at each site are on the UFT Web site. It is highly recommended that potential applicants check this site for complete details about the programs.

The fellowships run through July and August 2006. There are no stipends but all travel and living expenses will be covered.

DEADLINE: February 17, 2006
