This reminds me of a story. My teaching experience is in high school, but in a K-12 school, so I’ve seen a heck of a lot of what went on in kindergarten. One day, descending from the upper floors, I saw a line of kindergartners shuffling by, each with an 18 inch red and white striped hat balanced very seriously on his or her head. It was the hat from the Cat in the Hat.

Apparently it was the good doctor’s birthday.

“Hats off!” I said. “Hats off, let’s go! Don’t you know you’re not supposed to wear hats in school! What if someone confused you with a gang!”

The whole line broke into pandemonium. One or two looked like they might cry. Three little girls showed me the glue on their fingers. Most tried to explain to me the purpose of the hat, and one started, unaccountably, to dance.

The teacher was laughing up at the front of the line. Just then a second teacher came up.

“Aren’t they just too cute!” I said .

She frowned. “They aren’t cute! They are students, just like high school students –” (Oh that my high school students were just like them!). “We shouldn’t degrade them with words like cute!”

She’s not teaching anymore, though.

She administrates.
