School Leader Position

The United Federation of Teachers Secondary Charter School is accepting applications for a School Leader, commencing February 1, 2009.  This person will serve as the executive of the school, will report directly to the trustees, and supervise all staff. As an educator the School Leader must have a deep understanding of secondary curriculum and pedagogy, grades 6-12.  The selected candidate will work to develop a collaborative and trusting school culture that supports staff, facilitates the implementation of the school charter and design, and focuses on student achievement. The successful candidate will possess:
·   Substantial teaching experience, with a history of improving student achievement;
·   Experience as a school leader;
·   Experience managing budgets, and creating and implementing policies;
·   Excellent communication skills and writing ability;
·   A passion for improving urban secondary schools;
·   Demonstrated management and team-building experience;
·   A commitment to teacher voice and shared decision making in the educational workplace;
·   The ability to work in a fast-paced, demanding environment.

Experience in a supervisory position and appropriate supervisory credentials are strongly preferred.

    What’s with the outdated jargon?

    Principal, School Leader—

    In the 21st century the title should be Chief Executive or Educational Commander-In Chief.

    As an educator in the secondary school’s host school, I wonder why this position is posted since the school leader that was there already met and exceeded these qualifications and added some more positives that are not listed. I hope the new school leader is as much of a role model and surrogate father as the old one was. Good luck.
