Hey, guys. This isn't about kids or schools. It's about winning back political power, or at least not losing more power.

Who is going to remember what President Obama said to the kid? The charges would have been the same whatever the President said. What will be remembered is "socialist," "government takeover" and the other pejoratives. Denying the charges just adds to the salience: "Don't think of an elephant."

The Republicans use the same playbook over and over and the Democrats fall for it every time.

I hear your points, Leo. Personally though, I don't like it. It creeps me out. Having taught "1984", it does kind of strike me as Orwellian.

Thanks for writing this, Leo. I was horrified to read the front-page story in today's Times about the uproar in Texas over Obama's planned speech to students. "Cover your ears, children! The president would like to speak to you." It's truly frightening.
