Leo;

Maybe Randi should be proactive (godforbid!)and publicly state she is against charter schools. They only steal money from the public schools. Further, she should insist that the all public schools should have the rights that charter schools have.

1. The right to screen students.

2. The right to throw out discipline
    problems.

3. The right to hold parents
    accountable for their students.

4. The right of teachers to teach
    and not be micromanaged.

If Randi was really serious about improving the city schools she should stop pushing charter schools and start improving the environment in the public school classroom. I am not holding my breath based upon Randi's performance to date.

Dear CHTeacher:

There are a number of charter schools in New York that the UFT and NYSUT organized which started without union representation. They are only a hnadful at this point.

Part of the reason why we are insisting for card sheck is our experience in that organizing. We organized one school here in NYC, and by the next September all of the teachers who had led that organizing drive were gone.

Does anyone know if the UFT has ever organized a charter school after it has opened without a union? I teach in a charter school and love many aspects of the school. I do not enjoy being used as a tool to disparage teachers in traditional public schools. I left the DOE b/c I was disheartened by its heavyhandedness,not b/c I hate the UFT.

We are approaching a tipping point in the popularity of charters.

What can be done to ensure a fair debate?
