The first iteration of the UFT Providers website has launched at uftproviders.org. The UFT in partnership with ACORN is organizing over 30,000 home day care providers in New York City. Around the city home day care providers provide childcare and early education for many low-income families but they are paid wages near the poverty line.
The providers help children with reading, learning colors and numbers, yet are paid the same per-child rate whether they work 30 hours a week or 60. Their average annual wage is $19,933. Most do not have health insurance, vacation, or sick leave. Passage of the legislation on hold in Albany is a crucial step in their fight for to form a union.
