As a follow up to my piece submitted on April 26, 2009, I'd like to let everyone know that the Governor of NC is actually taking $75 in pay from each state worker, including teachers, for the months of June and July due to the state's budget crisis. What an insult.

Also, the teachers have been told that not only will no raises be awarded this next school year, but they will all actually be docked 1% of their annual salary. My sister still teaches in NC and is very upset over this news.

Thank you UFT for working on behalf of the teachers in NYC!

I'm glad to see that your experience has been a positive one in New York Schools. I know first-hand how important our schools are. However, as a chapter leader I can see how our educational "leaders" are working very hard to erode our hard-won rights. This new breed of "managers" find innovative ways to recreate the nightmare you've described. The UFT will have to be very diligent in dealing with the subtle manner in which new principals operate. They cite the right to disregard the contract with the supposed okay from DOE Legal. Speaking with other UFT members, we can see that the UFT is gradually losing its presence in our schools as they constantly have to adapt to the ever-changing structures created by Bloomberg and Klein.

Many of today's teaching personnel are post-Reagan folks who did not grow up with the importance of unions and believe the rhetoric of how self-serving and anti-child we are. It's not until teachers are faced with disciplinary charges that a new understanding is realized by them. Older teachers are cast aside in favor of new ones in order to save money and take advantage of newbies who do not yet know their rights.

Since you have a keen understanding of how valuable our union is, speak to your chapter leader and ask her/him how you can participate in the work of the UFT.
