Wear Blue to School on Feb. 10

On Feb. 10, AFT members around the country will be wearing blue to work to support the federal stimulus legislation currently being considered in Congress. The effort is part of the AFT’s “Fight for America’s Future: It’s Dollars and Sense” campaign. Essential services are facing draconian cuts due to the economic crisis, and the Feb. 10 show of solidarity is a way to send a clear message: Strengthening education, health care and public services is crucial in order to restore and preserve opportunity in this country. Tuesday, February 10, 2009 was UNITY DAY at United Federation of Teachers P.S. 75X Chapter. This was part of the nationwide ” Fight for American’s Future:It’s Dollars and Sense” American Federation of Teachers campaign. Throughout the nation, AFTers and their friends and colleagues wore blue to work. They were participating in a coast-to-coast Unity Day. The message was loud and clear: The members support our union’s desire to restore the economy—and put the nation on track for long-term recovery—by making wise investments in schools, colleges, healthcare and other vital public services.

Unity Day was also an opportunity to send our message to our New York State Senator.

    2/10/2009

    Dear Senator Charles E. Schumer,

As your constituents, we are calling on you to urgently and vigorously fight for the restoration of full education funding in the stimulus bill. Your support for this investment is vital to our students, to local taxpayers in your district who are feeling the pain of this recession, and to getting New York’s economy back on track.

We are counting on you to stand up to restore the cuts to:

    - the State Stabilization Fund ($79 billion to close education budget gaps)

    - Title I funding ($13 billion) and

    - school and public higher education modernization/facilities money.

Polls of your constituents show that even in tough times, they overwhelmingly reject cutting education. This money must remain in the stimulus package to help students in our public schools and colleges, restore state cuts to education, and bring new jobs to New York state. Please advocate fiercely for these essential resources for our state.

    Sincerely,

    P.S, 75X and P352@ 75X UFT Chapters
